Old Persia coincides with present Iran. Its southern shores face the Persian Gulf. It borders south west on Pakistan, north east on Afghanistan, north on Caucasus and Turkey.
Persia can no doubts be considered as the birthplace of some of the most beautiful rugs ever made. Some old and still existing manufactries ( Kashan, Isfahan, Kirman and others) gave, as far as the XV and XVI centuries, a great contribution to that phenomenon called " Persian Renaissance".
And even in manufactories established by western entrepeneurs in the XIX century like Mahal, Saruk or Ferahan, exceptional rugs were woven. All this reputation made the Persian rug the rug "par excellence". XX century production, on the contrary, has no originality and represents a decline of this art.
