Size: m. 7,06 x 4,60 - 23’2” x 15’1”
Age: beginning of XX century. Expressly before the first World War.
Condition: very good. No restorations. Light stains in field.
In old Persia Englishmen used to call this size rugs “Palace Carpets”.
Americans call any Chinese rug bigger than 9’x12’ ”oversize”. This to emphasize either the huge dimension and the small number they were made in.
I consider this rug the biggest white Chinese rug in the world.
The field is decorated with a delicate “ton sur ton” pattern framed by an unusual border where the inner band is based on a clouds (and bats (happiness) motif.
