CAUCASUS

Area of Baku

Size: m. 1,80 x 0,96 - 5’9” x 3’1”

Age: end of XIX century.

Condition: good. There is small restoration at one corner and a few lines are missing at one end.

The carpet belongs to the group of Chila with Arshang design. Its prototypes go back to the Safavid age.

The field is based on three lozenges and wild lilies surrounded by stylized blossoms and animal figures. The border has a main frame with “Cufic characters” flanked by two secondary floral frames.

A piece with similar field scheme is published in U. Schurmann Teppiche aus dem Kaukasus, Klinkhardt & Biermann Munich pg 286, who attributes the design to the village of Karagashli, in the Kuba district.

Please compare the piece also with the one published by John Eskenazi, Il Tappeto Orientale, Allemandi Torino 1987, pg 228 n. 130, who points out  how these carpets were often attributed to Kuba but their real origin is instead the area of the Eastern Shirwan.
