CAUCASUS
Kuba Zeiwa
Size: m. 1,70 x 1,22 - 5’6” x 4’0”
Age: XIX / XX century. Around 1900
Condition: good. Some corrosions on brown pile.
Provenance: Mr. Azad Vartian’s private collection, Vienna.
It is hard to find Zeiwas, which are rugs from the Kuba district, but when it happens they are immediately recognizable because of their radial medallions.
This piece has vivid colours. Three ivory medallions stand out on the brown dark field surrounded by several geometrical motives.
Many of these were inspired by nature so that some are animal figures.In the border the main band is based on an “S” pattern, a reminiscence of the Chinese facing dragons
