BRUSSELS
Apollo and the Cuman Sibyl

Size: m. 3,48 H x 2,00 L
Age: first half XVII century.
Condition: The piece is complete and perfectly preserved.

Belonging to the series, The Triumph of the Gods, the tapestry depicts the god Apollo, with a laurel wreath, and the Cuman Sibyl, kneeling down.

According to the legend, the god would have granted any wishes of hers to demonstrate his love. The Sybil filled up her hand with sand asking to live as many years as the number of specks, but she forgot to ask for eternal youth.

The theme, derived from Ovid’s Metamorphosis (book XIV), was very popular in various ages and was depicted several times in paintings. Among these the wonderful picture by Salvator Rosa, executed around 1660, now in the Wallace Collection, in London.
